It is often said that life imitates art. If that is the case, mortgage brokers in Baldivis and other parts of Australia may be working with some home loans that are reminiscent of the 1990’s, at least in raw numbers.
Are Tiny Houses the Next Big Housing Trend in Australia?
The 2000’s have been noted for a boom in house flipping and home improvement. Many, including us, believe both trends were heavily influenced by the spate of house flipping and home improvement shows on cable TV.
Both have become such a part of our culture now that nobody is the least bit surprised when a friend, relative or neighbour decides to flip or improve a house anymore. Thanks to a constant presence on TV and in other media, Australians are among the world’s most avid participants in house flipping and home improvements.
Why Tiny Houses?
As land becomes more expensive across the globe and more and more people are priced out of the housing market, people are looking for alternatives to renting. The desire to own our homes seems to be “hard-wired’ into our psyches. This global trend is finally coming to Australia, and it is about to get a lot of publicity.
On 4 January, Foxtel Lifestyle Home Channel began televising an eight part miniseries called Tiny House Australia. The miniseries is hosted by Andrew Winter. According to Mr Winter, more than 25% of Australians no longer live in freestanding homes and the number is getting larger all the time.
A recent article about the series in Perth Now Sunday Times cited three different tiny houses featured in the series: a 37 sqm loft, a 29 sqm tent and a 40 sqm building that was once a church and offers high ceilings.
